Drama and Music ( ARTS AND CULTURE) when used in an effective and constructive manner can play an important role in different communities by

1. Bringing communities in Harmony to reason together.

2. Building self-confidance and awareness in social.economical, political and health and in so doing, our communities develop.

3) Ensuring nation building, stability, and our new found Democracy through ARTS,CULTURE LANGUAGE

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Uvimba Theatre and Music laboratory was formed early in 1996 by Music and Drama educators who have been working in progassive community organisations (NGO'S).Seeing that there is little or no Music and Drama education in our townships

particularly in Guguletu, we felt that there is a need for such programmes. Our township has + - 500.000 people including children, youth and the elderly. There are 3 High Schools and over 10 primary and higher primary schools. Our History stipulates it very clearly that we have a very raw cultural backgroung and talent that needs to be utilised and Developed.

MISSION STATEMENT

Uvimba Theatre and Music is a community based organisation which strives for community development through ARTS.

We do this by educating the children and youth and also the illiterate in Music and Drama and by distribution of information through educational plays and Music shows.

Our long term goal is to have a healthy society free from crime, drugs, poverty, illiteracy and Discrimination.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

1. To equip children and youth with Music and Drama education.

2. To educate our children and youth and the community at large by putting up educational plays and puppet shows.

3. To encourage Live Music and Drama Performances by the students and teachers and for outside Musicians and Artists who want to put up a show or a play.

4. Provide training for students who have little or no Music training to gain access to more formal Music and Drama study options.

5. To conduct Music and Theatre reserarch with the aims of educating the children and youth and also to attain copyright.

6. Work with prograssive organisations with similar objectives.

7. Organise educational workshops in Music, Drama and Dance.

8. To run Capacity building workshops.

9. To use this medium as a communication and as well as entertainment and distribution of information not only to children and youth, but also to the illiterate, the marginalised and the disadvantaged communuties.

10. To instil respect for the ARTS.

11. To hold concerts and Drama productions that are created by students.

PLAN OF ACTION

Arts is the unifying factor when it comes to establishing identity of a NATION particularly our Diverse South Africa. The children and youth are that foundation.
